About Green: Green cleaning also known as eco (environmental) friendly cleaning or organic cleaning is the use of natural products and methods to clean a home. Most conventional cleaning products used today are petroleum-based and contain massive health and environmental hazards. Why choose cleaning products that destroy everything in its path? There are several natural products and methods that cleans a home and keeps a fresh smell but without the toxic side effects. 4 Steps to Green Cleaning

  1. Try to choose a utility company that offers clean, renewable energy. If this option is unavailable then reduce your electricity consumption. It’s simple; turn off all the appliances and technical gadgets when you are not using them. For instance, TVs, cell phone chargers, game systems, toasters, coffee makers, hairdryers, computers, etc. The average household has about 50 of these power-sucking items so it can be quite burdensome to switch them all off. An easy way to do this is to plug several in a close locality into a surge protector power strip. Also remember to turn off lights when leaving a room.

  2. Use natural cleaning solutions rather than the normal chemical-based products. You can also try cleaning with natural products such as vinegar and baking soda. Dust with a damp cloth rather than a duster wand to avoid stirring up household dust which contains toxins from the air. Always remove your shoes prior to entering your home and ask all of your guests to do the same. This is an effortless solution to reducing the toxins coming into your home. Furthermore, it will also mean less cleaning to remove dirt and dust on your floors or carpets.

  3. Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. This can never be stressed enough as a primary component for going green. This applies to almost every aspect of your household. Reduce the use of water and energy, reduce plastics, reduce disposable items like paper towels, napkins and paper cups. If you purchase plastic water bottles, paper plates/cups and the newspaper be sure to recycle. When it comes to re-use; think of ways to re-use what you would normally thrash. Old t-shirts can be cut into cleaning rags. Certain bags and containers can also be re-used for other creative alternatives.

4. Think green for your laundry and dishwasher. Choose energy sufficient models for your washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher. Also, try to avoid washing dishes and clothes unless you have a full load. A cold-cold or warm-cold wash is also more energy sufficient than a hot-hot wash. If every home in the United States did this, we could save enough energy to offset 100,000 barrels of oil per day. Another method is to use eco-friendly detergent and air-dry your clothes. The same can be said for your dishwasher. Don’t pre-rinse, open your dishwasher to air dry instead of heat-dry and use an eco-friendly product.
